Petrie delighted despite defeat

MONTROSE 0 PETERHEAD 1

-

An opportunist goal from Rory McAllister 20 minutes from time clinched victory for Peterhead against Montrose in Saturday’s pre-season friendly at Links Park.

Gable Endies boss Stewart Petrie was delighted with the way his players had performed despite the scoreline.

“I thought that it was a very good exercise for both teams,” he said.

“Fitness-wise we looked good considering we’ve only had four training sessions prior to today but compared to where we were this time last season I’m really happy.”

“We’re still looking to strengthen the squad prior to the competitive season getting under way and we’ve been working really hard to try and make that happen. But the players we bring in will need to be the right character and will have to improve the team.”

Montrose dominated the opening 45 minutes with Liam Callaghan, Martin Rennie and Ross Campbell all coming close to opening the scoring with the Blue Toon’s only opportunity coming before the break when their trialist drilled in a shot which was well held by Jordan Miller.

Montrose had the bulk of territorial advantage again after the break but couldn’t find a way past visitors keeper Greg Fleming and they paid the price 20 minutes from time when McAllister fired home a low right-foot drive which gave Millar no chance.
