Obiri sets world lead time with 5,000m win in Rabat

World champion Hellen Obiri won a star-studded 5,000m at the Rabat Diamond League in Rabat, Morocco, last night in a world leading 14 minutes 21.75 seconds.

Pre-race favourite Genzebe Dibaba (Ethiopia) fell away from the leading group with three laps remaining leaving Kenyan Obiri and former European 1,500m champion Sifan Hassan (Netherland­s) to battle out the sprint finish.

Hassan came second as she clocked a European record time of 14:22.34.

With the leading group of six 30m clear with four laps remaining, Dundee Hawkhill’s Eilish McColgan headed the chasing pack in seventh in 14:52.83, well inside her season’s best of 15:17.01.

Scottish colleague Stephanie Twell (Aldershot FD), winner of the UK 5,000m title two weeks ago, came home in 12th in 15:36.45.

UK 200m record-holder Dina AsherSmith led halfway down the home straight until Olympic 400m champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo (Bahamas) finished strongly, posting a meeting record 22.29 seconds. Asher-Smith was second as she clocked 22.40 while Jodie Williams was sixth in 23.26.

World 60m record-holder Christian Coleman (USA) won the 100m in a meeting record 9.98 seconds, a time shared by runner-up Ronnie Baker (USA). UK champion Reece Prescod was fifth and GB colleague CJ Ujah sixth.

Scottish record holder Lynsey Sharp showed improved form in the 800m as she crossed the line in seventh in a season’s best 1:59.86, her first sub 2:00 clocking this season.

Matthew Hudson-Smith shaded 3rd place over 400m in 44.79 while Charlie Grice improved his season’s best in the 1,500m to 3:34.20, finishing fifth amongst a large field.
