Dundee Naval and Military War Pensions Committee last night approved of a scheme providing for an increase in the staff and larger office accommodat­ion. It was pointed out that the committee was now spending as much as Dundee Parish Council. The scheme recommende­d the appointmen­t of a male assistant in charge of the treatment and training department and a male assistant in charge of the cash department, while the latter is also to be available for other duties.

50 years ago

Bad weather at HMS Condor, Arbroath, meant a poor start to the 1968 Scottish invitation­al parachute championsh­ips. It had been hoped that jumping in the qualifying rounds could have started in the morning, but strong winds and overcast conditions led to hours of heel-kicking. Conditions did not improve and the event was postponed for the day. Six teams are entered into the event including a West German team. The event is sponsored by the Chandy Bottling Company.

Sir Angus Ogilvy, president of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, said the new Biomedical Research Centre at Ninewells Hospital would make “a major contributi­on to winning the war against cancer.” Speaking at the official opening of the centre, Sir Angus praised the efforts of Tayside people in raising £1 million in just 15 months to help set up the facility. The figurehead of the appeal campaign was Beano character Dennis the Menace. Sir Angus later unveiled a plaque to mark the opening.

A Dundee couple betrayed by conman James Reilly are praying his crimes do not shatter the trust ill veterans have in local charity services. Husband and wife Charlie and Jill Stewart struck up a friendship with Reilly and helped raise money for his charity Tayforth Veterans Project. The couple only became aware of his crimes after reading details in the newspaper. The Dundee-based pair are now desperate to show that Veterans First Point is not linked in any way to his crimes.
