Order of the boot for golden boy Kane

-

Harry Kane has finished as the World Cup’s top scorer to join Gary Lineker as England’s only Golden Boot winners.

The 24-year-old’s six-goal haul proved insurmountable as his nearest rivals fell short as France swept aside Croatia 4-2 in the final in Moscow.

Kane scored a brace in England’s Group G opener against Tunisia before netting a hat-trick against Panama and scoring a penalty as Colombia were overcome in the last-16. The Tottenham striker tailed off and failed to score in England’s last three matches in Russia but his six-goal haul was still two clear of a group of five players.

Lineker is the only previous Englishman to win the Golden Boot, having also managed six goals during the 1986 World Cup. Lineker said on Twitter: “Congratulations to#HKane on winning the golden boot. Welcome to the club, young man.”

Former England defender Gary Neville said he would be surprised if Kane was not carrying an injury following his display in the semi-final defeat to Croatia. He again looked a bit sluggish against Belgium and lacked the sharpness and movement he showed at the start of the competition.

Klyian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann, who both scored in France’s 4-2 final win over Croatia, ended on four goals apiece, two behind Kane.

Russia’s Denis Cheryshev, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku also scored four times.
