Local MP lends a hand during Limekilns beach clean-up

-

Fife Girl Guides got their hands dirty by organising a beach clean-up at Limekilns.

The 7th Dunfermline Girl Guides were aided by Dunfermline and West Fife SNP MP Douglas Chapman in the pick-up operation.

The group invited the MP along to help raise awareness of plastic pollution, which is part of a wider Girl Guide project on looking after the environment.

They were joined by Plastic Free Dunfermline campaigner James Daw for the clean-up, in which three bags of plastic waste were collected by the group.

Alison Fox, leader of the 7th Dunfermline Girl Guides, said: “Activities organised by the Girl Guides are very much led by the girls themselves and, after a lot of them watched the Blue Planet programme over Christmas time, they were inspired to help the local wildlife by cleaning a beach.”

Mr Chapman is no stranger to beach clean-ups and has been an active environmental campaigner.

He took part in a North Queensferry event organised by environmental charity Fidra, where thousands of plastic nurdles were picked up from the coastline.

Volunteers, including Rosyth SNP councillor Sam Steele, collected 450,000 nurdles from the shore.

“I was more than happy to once again play my part in collecting plastic waste on our West Fife shoreline to highlight how big a problem this is locally,” he said.

“The Girl Guides group was very enthusiastic about organising this beach clean, so it’s encouraging to see children and young people so aware of how damaging plastic waste is to the environment and wanting to do their bit to protect it.”
