Abusive man threatened to ‘set fire’ to ex-partner after jail release

-

A 31-year-old Fife man threatened to “set fire” to his former partner when she ended their relationship.

Richard Grant, formerly of Dunfermline, now living at Lomond Drive, Falkirk, had hoped to get back together with his ex after being released from jail.

However, when it became clear that was not going to happen, the court heard that he was “heartbroken” and reacted angrily.

His actions resulted in Grant appearing from custody at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He admitted that on July 1 he behaved in a threatening or abusive manner by making a threat of extreme violence to Caroline McDonald, his former partner.

Depute fiscal Claire Kennedy said Grant sent a message to the woman saying: “I’m going to set fire to you.”

Defence solicitor Chris Sneddon said his client had been released from a jail sentence on June 28 and had hoped to resume his relationship with the complainer.

The court heard that the complainer had visited Grant when he was in custody.

“He thought they may have a rosy future together but she did not want to continue the relationship,” added Mr Sneddon.

The solicitor said that his client had sent a previous message to the woman saying she had broken his heart and had lied to him.

Mr Sneddon added: “He accepts he acted in a very bad way and realises how stupid he was. “

Sheriff Craig McSherry called for background reports and Grant will return for sentencing on August 8.
