Lichties boss delighted to add Toshney to squad on loan deal

-

Arbroath boss Dick Campbell has bolstered his squad with the addition of Lewis Toshney on loan from Dundee United.

The 26-year-old has not played since October 21 in a home defeat by Inverness that proved to be manager Ray McKinnon’s last game in charge of the Tangerines.

Dundonian Toshney has battled back to full fitness, with Campbell making his move for the former Scotland Under-21 star who can play in defence or midfield.

He will go straight into the squad for the Lichties’ Betfred Cup tie at Alloa tonight as the Angus side look to build on Saturday’s win on penalties over United at Tannadice.

Campbell said: “I am delighted to bring Lewis Toshney in on loan from Dundee United.

“He is a big, strong player who has played at a high level and we have signed him until January.

“He started his career at Celtic and United paid Raith Rovers a five-figure fee for him.

“We are really strong at the back at the moment so I see Lewis playing as a defensive midfielder for us.

“He has been really unlucky with injuries but hopefully that’s in the past now and he can become an important player.

“He will play against Alloa as we look to build on what was a great result against Dundee United at the weekend.”

Campbell added: “I thought the lads played really well and created some good chances in front of a magnificent travelling support.

“However, despite the win I will not be changing our approach to these games.

“We will be using them to build fitness as it is absolutely crazy that part-time sides are being asked to play competitive fixtures at the start of July.

“We have five players who are either teachers or whose wives are teachers and they have to take their holidays at this time.

“To make a bad situation even worse, you are not allowed to play trialists in the Betfred.

“We only had three outfield subs against United and it will be the same at Alloa.”
