100 years ago

Dundee Law and Finance Committee agreed that male members of the clerical staffs in public department­s should have an increase of £1 per week over the pre-war salary, it being understood that this should only apply to those who were in the Corporatio­n at the outbreak of war, and that any increases and bonus granted in the interval should be included in the £1 conceded. With regard to the females, it was agreed that their cases should be left to the respective conveners.

50 years ago

An 11-year-old Arbroath boy was pulled more than 200 feet up a cliff at Auchmithie yesterday after he had fallen part of the way down. The boy, Billy Marnie, was taken by ambulance to Arbroath Infirmary. He had a gashed knee and a bump on the head. The alarm was raised about half-past one at East Seaton Farm, near Arbroath, by 10-yearold Graham Cargill. The boys had gone to pick berries, but as there were no jobs for them, they decided to walk along the cliff top towards Auchmithie.

25 years ago

Hundreds of thousands of sightseers gathered along 10 miles of coastline on Saturday to enjoy the start of the Tall Ships Race. The 120 entrants in the Sail Training Associatio­n extravagna­za set off to Bergen, Norway, from the mouth of the River Tyne. With hundreds more vessels – from the Royal Navy frigate signalling the event’s start to a myriad of small boats joining in the excitement – the North Sea throbbed with colour and movement from the shore to the horizon.

Events to promote cycling will see cars banned from a section of Perth city centre. Businesses and residents have given a mixed reaction to the plan, which will result in some major routes and streets being car-free between the hours of 6am and 8pm on Sunday August 6. Council officials have urged locals to “be patient” and acknowledg­e there will be “some impact” on traffic. While some in Perth have backed the ban, others warned it could have a detrimenta­l impact on local traders.
