Man guilty of carrying out sex attacks on women

COURT: Dean Martin, of Dundee, facing lengthy jail term for sexual assault and rape

- JAMES MULHOLLAND

A man is facing a lengthy prison sentence after a jury convicted him of raping two women and sexually assaulting a third female.

Dean Martin, 35, sat in a court room dock shaking his head after jurors convicted him of preying on his victims between March 2005 and December 2010.

He spent the past week standing trial at the High Court in Edinburgh claiming he had enjoyed consensual sexual intercourse with the women.

But after spending three hours deliberating their verdicts, jurors returned guilty verdicts on a total of six charges.

Martin was acquitted on a charge of raping a third woman in February last year.

But judge Lord Boyd remanded Martin, who has previous convictions for violence and dishonesty, in custody ahead of a sentencing hearing next month.

Lord Boyd told Martin, who has previously served prison sentences, that he wanted a report into his background.

He added: “I could move to sentence you today given the time you have already spent in custody.

“However, I wish to discover more about your background so I will adjourn sentence for the preparation of a criminal justice social work report.”

Martin, of St Boswells Crescent, Dundee, had pled not guilty to the charges facing him. His legal team had lodged special defences of consent.

However, the court heard how Martin preyed on his first victim on an occasion between March 2005 and March 2006.

Jurors heard how he raped his first victim, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, while she was asleep and was unable to give her consent to sex. The court heard that Martin raped her.

A 28-year-old woman told the court that Martin targeted her on various occasions between 2007 and January 2009.

She said he repeatedly raped her and subjected her to physical attacks.

The mum of three said that if she didn’t agree to have intercourse with Martin, he would physically abuse her.

The woman added: “If I didn’t give him what he wanted, I would get hurt for it.”

Martin also sexually assaulted a third woman between March 2009 and December 2010 at a location in Dundee.

Jurors acquitted Martin of raping a third woman in February 2017.

Prosecutors also withdrew an allegation that Martin had physically assaulted the 28-year-old mum of three.

The allegation contained the claim that Martin threw a knife at the mum and her baby.

Yesterday, jurors convicted Martin of charges of rape and sexual assault.

Prosecution lawyer Jim Keegan QC told Lord Boyd that Martin had a lengthy criminal record.

Defence solicitor advocate Chris Fyffe said he’d reserve his mitigation until the sentencing hearing next month.

Martin will be sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh on September 19.
