Team GB takes gold in the women’s 4x100m
The Zurich Weltklasse hosted the first of the two-part Diamond League Finals where GB won the final event – the women’s 4 x 100m relay.
The European Championship winning quartet Asha Philip, Imani Lansiquot, Bianca Williams and Dina Asher-Smith prevailed in 42.28 seconds, with Asher-Smith overhauling Switzerland 25m from the finish line.
5,000m European silver medallist Eilish McColgan (Dundee Hawkhill) faced a rematch with European champion Sifan Hassan (Netherlands) and Commonwealth champion Hellen Obiri (Kenya).
Following a fast start at world record pace the tempo settled after 800m but World and Commonwealth champion Hellen Obiri picked up the pace after 3,000m with six still in contention, including European champion Sifan Hassan (Netherlands). A pulsating final 200m saw Obiri and Hassan fight out a blistering finish, Obiri hanging on to win in 14.38.39, two strides ahead of Hassan’s 14:38.77.
Scottish record holder McColgan finished 11th in 15:09.00 with Welsh athlete Melissa Courtney 13th at 15:24.58.
Pitreavie athlete Eilidh Doyle ended her year in the 400m hurdles, following her struggles through injury to place fifth in 55.05 seconds, her third-fastest time this year. Olympic champion Dalilah Muhammad (USA) who has also struggled at times this season, clocked a winning 53.88.
Murielle Ahoure (Ivory Coast) won the 100m in 11.01 seconds with European champion Dina AsherSmith second in 11.08 and African champion Marie-Josée Ta Lou (Ivory Coast) in third at 11.10.
Noah Lyles (USA) dominated the men’s 200m in 1967 ahead of world champion Ramil Guliyev (Turkey), at 19.98. GB’s Nethaneel MitchellBlake faded to 8th at 20.53.
Caster Semenya won her third consecutive Diamond League 800m title building up a sizeable lead over the opening lap to finish 20 metres clear in 1:55.27, ahead of US athlete Ajee Wilson at 1:57.86.
European champion Matthew Hudson-Smith finished 3rd over the one lap race (44.95) in a close finish won by Fred Kerley (USA) in 44.80.
In the field Holly Bradshaw claimed fourth place in the pole vault clearing 4.57m as Katerina Stefanidi (Greece) soared over a winning 4.87m.
The remaining Diamond League Finals are held tonight in Brussels.
