Manager believes time was right for young front man to move on

Dundee boss Neil McCann insists the arrival of Kenny Miller at the club did not signal the departure of Craig Wighton to Hearts.

The young Dark Blues front man last night signed a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £250,000, with the Edinburgh side just a day after veteran striker Miller penned a contract at Dens.

McCann, though, insists the timing was purely coincidental and revealed why Dundee and 21-year-old Wighton felt the move to Tynecastle was the right one for both parties.

The manager, who also moved from the Dark Blues to Hearts when he was a player, said: “First of all, the fee I believe was agreeable to the club.

“Craig was coming to the end of his contract (next summer). We had discussed a new deal with him but maybe Craig felt it was time to move on.

“I have been in the position myself at this very club coming through.

“He is a terrific talent and I have no doubts Craig will do well for himself.

“He maybe was a bit disappointed with his performances this season.

“It was maybe time for a freshness. “Craig didn’t have to go to bring Kenny in but we just felt that the offer was right at this time with his contract running out.

“Craig felt he wanted to get a move and we agreed to it.

“I just want to wish the boy every success going to a fantastic club I know very well.”
