High suffer at hands of league leaders Jed

NATIONAL LEAGUES: Dundee well beaten at home while Howe held by GHK

- RON EVANS

What promised to be an intriguing encounter between Hamilton and Kirkcaldy, two sides with conflicting results in their opening matches, was disappointingly postponed when Laigh Bent took the full brunt of the rain and was unplayable.

In retrospect, it may have crossed the minds of Dundee High Rugby that it might have been no bad thing had Mayfield suffered similarly as they went down 36-7 to a Jed side who have now hoisted themselves to the top of the Tennents National 1 table.

It was virtually one-way traffic in the first half as Jed romped to a 29-0 lead and with the bonus point in the bag, looked to take their foot off the pedal in the second half.

All credit to Dundee, however, as they restricted the borderers to only one more try.

Lock Gregor Law notched two tries for Jed in the first half, Paulo Ferreira, Lewis Young and Monty Mitchell had one each with Ewan Scott and Gary Munro helping themselves to a conversion apiece.

Darren Gillespie ran in try number six for Jed then Fraser McKay finally got Dundee on the board and converted his own try but it was scant reward for their efforts as they now find themselves still in ninth position in the table.

On Saturday Dundee travel to face a Musselburgh side who have picked up a few tasty scalps in their five wins from seven starts and it won’t be easy – it never is – at Stoneyhill

There was never much in it as Howe of Fife took on GHK at Duffus Park in their National 2 clash, only a Danny Campbell conversion for GHK separating them at the break with Sean Murray having crossed for Howe and Hugh Parker claiming the visitors try for a 7-5 lead.

It continued in true nip and tuck fashion after half time and again it was a conversion which was the difference with Sam Rowlands converting both Murray’s tries which made up his hat-trick but Campbell converting only Parker’s second and his miss on Tony Lopez’s try left the scores level at 19-19 on the final whistle.

On Saturday Howe travel to Peebles and with the Gytes crew blowing hot and cold, they will hope to catch them on one of their more chilly afternoons.

Despite the best efforts of Jonathan Armit who scored all of Perthshire’s points in their 20-13 defeat at Hugh end en, the North Inch men came back up the road with only a losing bonus to show for all their toil.

Hills had two first half tries from Scott Davidson and Harry Perston with Euan Brown converting one with Armit’s penalty the only Shire reply.

Armit landed a second penalty and converted his own try but a Brown try and Rory Harte penalty clinched it for the home side and that loss sees Perthshire stay in fourth spot in the table.

With a gap now appearing between them and the top three of Gordonians, Newton Stewart and West of Scotland and visit from Gordonians on the cards next Saturday, this could be a crunch game for both sides.
