Search for lorry driver as A9 victim is named
Officers launch appeal for information from motorists after 80-year-old is killed on road in Perthshire
The family of an 80-year-old Perth woman who died after a road accident on the A9 have been left “devastated.”
Yesterday, police confirmed that Doreen Williams had been formally identified as having died following her body being found on the road between the Inveralmond and Broxden roundabouts, around 2.15am on Sunday.
Officers have said they are keen to speak to the driver of a lorry that stopped in the nearside lane of the southbound carriageway of the A9.
Following an earlier witness appeal, police have now spoken to the driver of a white van and have eliminated him from their inquiry.
Detective Inspector Ray Birnie, the senior investigating officer for the inquiry, said: “Our thoughts are foremost with Doreen’s family.
“They are devastated by their loss and are currently being supported by specialist police officers during this difficult time.
“Extensive police inquiries are ongoing and I can confirm that the driver of a white van has now responded to the initial witness appeal. The driver was able to provide significant information and has since been eliminated from our inquiry.
“However, it is absolutely vital that we speak to everyone who was travelling south on the A9 between the roundabout at Inveralmond and the roundabout at Broxden about 2.15am on Sunday.”
He continued: “We need to speak to anyone who saw Doreen walking along the A9 or on nearby Dunkeld Road, or who saw an HGV lorry stopped on the nearside lane of the southbound carriageway with its hazard warning lights illuminated.
“We know that several vehicles passed both the incident and the HGV. I urge these drivers to come forward now.
“Doreen’s family need the help of the public to find the answer to what happened to their mother.”
Relatives of Mrs Williams did not wish to comment when contacted by The Courier at the family home in Bute Drive, Perth, on Thursday. A neighbour described her as a “lovely person”.
Anyone with information on the incident should contact 101.
