Ferry to the pier

-

“Great photographs of Newport pier bring back memories of the early 1950s,” emails Bill Grant, “getting on the Fifie to go over to Newport.

“When we got there, we had the long walk down to Tayport lighthouse before we got in the water. My dad knew a man who worked there, so we had no need for a ‘bilie up’ fire to be lit. We got hot water from him, so we had plenty time to paddle as I had not learned to swim then.

“We played all day, then had the long walk back to the pier to catch the ferry for home. I have been known to fall asleep on the crossing. It seems a lifetime ago, but when you see the pictures all the happy times come back.”
