Kelty show heart to rescue point against students

-

After finding themselves two down at home to Stirling University with under 20 minutes left, Kelty Hearts were just grateful to salvage a point in their Lowland League meeting.

Kieron Hall hit a double for the hosts inside the first 12 minutes.

Barry Ferguson’s men did not respond until the 73rd minute when Stuart Cargill cut the deficit, with Murray Carstairs saving their blushes with an equaliser two minutes later.

In Conference A of the East of Scotland League Hill of Beath recovered from a poor first half performance to leave Musselburgh with a point.

Indeed, having hit the post and had two cleared off the line in a much improved second-half showing, Haws boss Kevin Fotheringham felt his side should have won.

Despite the Fifers toiling in the first half, Musselburgh failed to take advantage and only a Nathan Evans goal separated the sides at the break.

That was cancelled out by a Ricky Patrick header from a Joe Kirby corner 20 minutes from time.

Elsewhere, Oakley were held at home by Dunbar United.

In a good game, both sides had chances to win but it finished 1-1 with Anton McGovern the Oakley scorer.

Second-placed Dundonald Bluebell’s 2-0 Conference B win at home to Sauchie was a hard-fought affair.

Victory was the Moorside men’s reward for hard work and sound defensive performance.

Callum Smith opened the scoring after 13 minutes, but it was only after Archie Campbell scored the second nine minutes from time that Bluebell could breathe more easily,

Primrose moved up to sixth after the 10-1 demolition of pointless Eyemouth at Humbug Park.

The scorers were Scott Hynd with a hat-trick, Scott Lawrie and Dale Allan with doubles, plus singles from Mark McKenzie, Darren Aitken and Barry Paterson.

Jeanfield Swifts were worthy 4-1 winners away to a hard-working Inverkeithing Hillhead Swifts to maintain their unbeaten record and enhance their Conference C title prospects.

Paul Simpson got the first after 40 minutes, with Alan McLaren, Chris Scott and Rhys Davies their other scorers.

It is certainly tight at the top, with Broxburn having defeated Linlithgow to oust the league leaders. Swifts are now level with Linlithgow on games and points and both have a game in hand on Broxburn.

Meanwhile, there were five different scorers for St Andrews in their 5-0 win at Stirling University to extend their recent good run which now extends to four games unbeaten.

The men on target were Ryan McInnes, Stephen Stark, Ollie Fleming, Ross Cunningham and Jack Wilson.
