36-year-old motorist caught twice at more than six times over limit

A Fife woman is facing jail after being caught behind the wheel while more than six times over the drink-drive limit on two occasions.

Joanna August committed the second offence while she was awaiting sentencing for the first incident which took place at Bishops Court in Kennoway on October 19.

The 36-year-old was seen staggering between parked cars as she made her way to her own vehicle after purchasing a bottle of vodka from a nearby shop.

Stunned onlookers began to film August on their mobile phones after seeing her swig from the bottle as she sat in the driver’s seat of the Vauxhall Zafira.

Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court heard she then attempted to manoeuvre out of the parking bay, before striking another vehicle and coming to a stop in the middle of the car park.

Police officers arrived at the scene after being alerted by locals and noticed a strong smell of alcohol coming from August.

They performed a roadside breath test and recorded a reading of 138 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 22.

She admitted drink-driving at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court in November and had sentence deferred by Sheriff Jamie Gilchrist, who remarked that she had given an “extraordinarily high reading”.

She was also handed an interim driving ban and was due to return for sentencing on January 10.

However, the Bonnybank woman appeared back in the dock charged with new offences after being found in control of a Vauxhall Zafira while under the influence on January 6.

August admitted being in charge of the car on Park Street in Kirkcaldy after consuming so much alcohol that she gave a breath sample of 133 microgrammes.

She also pled guilty to driving a vehicle without valid insurance in place.

Her not guilty plea to an additional charge of driving while disqualified was accepted by the Crown.

Sheriff James Williamson again deferred sentence until February 7 to allow for reports including a restriction of liberty assessment.
