Parkhead final hero Low aiming to knock out Dons

-

Queen of the South’s Nicky Low helped Aberdeen to their last cup final win five years ago but is aiming to thwart their bid for silverware this season.

The former Dundee midfielder came off the bench to score from the spot in the 4-2 penalty shoot-out win over Inverness in the 2014 League Cup final at Parkhead, after the game had ended goalless.

It was Derek McInnes’ first trophy win as Dons boss and the first for the club in 19 years.

Aberdeen have come close to adding to that achievement on several occasions since but Low, 27, who signed for Gary Naysmith’s Championship side in January after leaving Irish outfit Derry, will have no qualms about ending the Dons’ hopes this season in Sunday’s William Hill Scottish Cup last-16 tie at Pittodrie.

He said: “I don’t really remember much about the final. I remember Barry Robson said to me leading up to it that it is always hard to focus as you are so excited as a young boy. He told a few younger lads to enjoy it.

“We tried to enjoy it but you didn’t until you watched the videos back and you saw how happy it was. It has been a few years but they have had excellent cup runs since then, and have been in finals and semi-finals consistently.

“Before that they were getting put out by lesser teams so on that side of things they have done really well although knowing him (McInnes), he will be disappointed not to add to that.

“It is part and parcel of football that you join new teams and you come up against old clubs but obviously when we go up there on Sunday we will try to win and get into the next round.

“But it is going to be a tough game, they are a good team.”
