Breeders ready to showcase calves

Scotland are preparing to showcase their calves at this month’s Royal

Spring Show.

The event, organised by the Royal Northern Agricultur­al Society in conjunctio­n with Aberdeen and Northern Marts (ANM), takes place at the Thainstone Centre, Inverurie, on Wednesday February 27.

An entry of 60 calves are forward for the show and sale of exhibition cattle, which will be judged by well-known pedigree and commercial producer Melanie Alford, from Staplegrov­e Mills, Taunton, Somerset.

Entries include 12 calves from fatherand-son duo John and Craig Robertson, who achieved the top price of £7,800 last year when their overall champion heifer went through the ring.

Their sale leader, an 11-month-old home-bred black heifer by their stock bull Powerhouse Harlequin, and out of a Limousin cross cow, sold to Donald Morrison, Cairn Nulla, Kinlochber­vie.

Their entry from Newton of Logierait, near Pitlochry, includes a full sister to last year’s top-priced heifer.

Other entries include eight calves from regular consigners Mark and Debby Munro of Invercharr­on Farm, Ardgay.

They scooped the overall champion title at the spectacula­r last year and it went on to sell for £4,000.

Keith farmer Gordon Hendry, and sons Craig and Jack, of Heads of Auchinderr­an, have five calves forward, while the Robertsons of Easter Fodderlett­er, Tomintoul, have an entry of four.

Well-known showing duo Blair Duffton and Rebecca Stuart, of Huntly and Insch, have five calves forward, while Ian Miller of Miller Farms, North Lurg, Midmar, has four beasts entered.

ANM head of livestock John Angus, said: “The livestock sale element of the Royal Northern Spring Show is a fastgrowin­g part of the event.

“We are delighted to be working once again with the Royal Northern Agricultur­al Society.”
