The inquiry into the Iolaire disaster was resumed yesterday at Stornoway. Captain Cameron, master of s.s. Shiela, spoke of seeing the Iolaire within five minutes of her arrival at Kyle. He said it was quite possible for such an accident to happen with a thoroughly careful and competent officer who was not well acquainted with the tides at that particular spot. He also bore witness to having seen the Iolaire leave the pier in good order and a thoroughly seamanlike fashion and to the perfect sobriety of the officers and crew.

Two Glasgow men were injured when trapped inside a giant concrete mixer yesterday. It is thought the machine was accidentally switched on while they were cleaning the bowl. The accident happened at the approaches to the Kingston Bridge being built over the Clyde. Eugene Docherty and John Kelly, both 28 years old, were taken to the Victoria Infirmary. The men were scraping the inside of the mixer when the blades began to move, trapping one man by the body and the other by his right leg.

It was suggested that a battalion would be permanently based there.

A dog that was buried alive has been rescued following an epic 74-hour rescue mission in the Angus glens. Patterdale terrier Charlie was trapped under 12½ feet of solid rock at Invermark Estate after falling down a hole. Seven gamekeepers undertook the gruelling task of digging him out with hand tools over the course of three days in sub-zero conditions. The filthy dog finally emerged remarkably unscathed after a hydraulic breaker was brought in to help with the final push.
