Land of sports curiosities

-

Pickleball isn’t the only unusual sport to bring out Courier Country’s competitive side.

Fife will host the finest footgolf players in the UK today when the Scottish Masters is held at Cupar.

The game is similar to golf but uses a football, which has to be kicked into a 21-inch cup.

Walking football is another fast-growing activity, with clubs across Tayside and Fife allowing players to enjoy the social aspect of the beautiful game as they get older and a little less nimble. Walking rugby is also on the rise.

Fife tops the league for strange sports though, as the home of one of the country’s only quidditch clubs. The game originated on the playing fields of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter novels, where players ride broomsticks as they battle to get balls into pole-top goals.

The rules are similar in real life, although the St Andrews Snidgets use broom-handles between their legs instead of flying through the air.
