Dodds hits out at Nelms over mishandling of boss search

Derek Adams has ruled himself out of the running for the vacant Dundee manager’s job.

The former Ross County and Plymouth Argyle boss admitted he had been approached by the Dark Blues but had decided not to enter into talks with the club.

The 43-year-old was speaking on BBC Sportsound last night alongside fellow guest Billy Dodds who launched a withering attack on Dens managing director John Nelms.

The former Scotland, Dundee and Rangers striker accused the Dark Blues chief of mishandling the search for a new boss and also said the American had hung him out to dry when Jim McIntyre wanted to bring him in as his assistant when he was appointed manager after replacing Neil McCann back in October.

That move fell through after Dundee fans responded badly to the chance of Dodds – who they believe acted against the club during the dark days of administration in 2010-11 – returning to Dens.

McIntyre ultimately paid the price for the Dark Blues being relegated from the Premiership with the search for his replacement beginning in earnest soon after.

Just this week though, Inverness rejected what they called an “unsolicited” approach from Dundee to speak to their manager John Robertson with Adams now also ruling himself out of contention.

He said: “I am looking to get back into the game as soon as possible.

“I am ready to go somewhere I feel I can benefit the football club and they can help me in my managerial career.

“They (Dundee) asked to speak to me but I haven’t spoken to Dundee and I am not going to speak to them for various reasons. I don’t think it is the right move for me at this moment in time.”

Dundee have been conducting interviews this week with the likes of Jim Goodwin, James McPake and Kenny Miller all understood to be in the running to become the new manager.

However, Dodds said: “I feel Dundee is turning into a poisoned chalice, I really do. Two coaches that have gone in there that I know well and are good coaches have lost their jobs.

“I wasn’t happy with the way John Nelms handled my situation with Jim McIntyre.

“He left me out to dry a wee bit for probably five days without even getting in contact and then decides to call me.

“I don’t think he has handled appointing the manager just now – and he has to get it right – in the right manner.

“You see John Robertson coming out, having a go and not taking the job, Derek has talked there. I think John Nelms is under pressure the way he has handled the full situation regarding Dundee.

“He has to get this manager right and he is not going about his job well.

“He is easily influenced and he has to get better at his job. I think the Dundee fans will give him stick if he doesn’t get this appointment right.

“I think he is over influenced by people on social media who are supporters.”
