CRIEFF STAR FOCUSES ON WORLD CUP

CANOEING

PENNIE SO CLOSE

Crieff’s Fiona Pennie missed out on the K1 kayak final by just 0.08secs after finishing 11th in the semi-finals at the European Canoe Slalom Championships in Pau.

The 2013 champion’s time of 110.32 was fast enough to make the top three, but two clipped gates cost her four seconds in time penalties and narrowly ruled her out of the final. She said: “I was quick enough on some bits of the course, but it just didn’t go my way this time. You just have to move on to the next race, so I’ll go home and focus on the World Cup at Lee Valley in two weeks. “That’s the next stage of selection for next year’s Olympics.”

HOCKEY

DAUNTING 4-NATIONS TASK Scotland’s U21 women, including Dundee Wanderers trio Ruth Blaikie, Aspen Cumming and Ellie Wilson, face a daunting task when they go head-to-head with table-topping India at the 4-Nations Tournament in Dublin this afternoon.

Ireland got off to a dream start on Friday night when Abbi Russell and Jess McMaster gave the hosts a 2-0 cushion within 12 minutes. Although the young Scots quickly regrouped to give a strong team performance for the remainder of the match, they were unlucky to see several attempts to claw back the deficit fail to find the target. Saturday’s clash with Canada proved even more exasperating. Scotland were the dominant force outfield but were eventually punished for failure to convert a string of set-pieces, while Julia Ross was quick to home in on a single lapse of concentration. Scotland head coach Neil Menzies said: “It was a positive performance but we’re disappointed not to win. We had eight or nine penalty corners, and created a number of chances, but we’ll need to improve our execution.”

MOTORSPORT

MOODIE GRABS HEADLINES Fifer Gordon Moodie grabbed the headlines at Cowdenbeath Racewall when he won the BriSCA Formula II Scottish Championship in a hardfought race on Saturday.

The first of the June Speedweekends got off to a fine start and there were some exciting races although the 1300 saloon field got decimated after George Hendry’s engine blew and quite a few drivers crashed out on the resulting oil slick.

There were two rollovers – Dougie Ford in his 1300 Saloon and Kai Gilmour in the Minis. Yesterday, despite the gloomy weather forecast, it stayed dry but there was controversy at the close of the European Championship when the first home, Dean McGill, was penalised a couple of places for a last lap incident.

Charlie Santry won the Ministox East of Scotland Championship but it was Jay Paterson who won the Joan Purdie memorial race.

The Stoxkarts Scottish Championship was won by Mark Royall with Connor Benstead taking the Junior version.
