Moo-ve over Wullie – art trail a major coo for Crieff
‘Cowches’ will be dotted around Perthshire town
A new Highland cow art trail is getting ready to moo-ve into Crieff next month after attracting sponsors and artists for all 11 attractions.
The brightly painted Highland cow benches – or “cowches” – will be dotted around the Perthshire town as far out as Glenturret Distillery and Innerpeffray Library from July 1 to September 6.
After September 6 they’ll be auctioned and the money donated to the Scottish Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA).
Local artist June McEwan has designed two of the cows, one sponsored by Crieff Highland Gathering and the other to be placed outside the historic Innerpeffray Library, which was sponsored by a private donor.
June is excited to be a part of the project which she hopes will help bring more visitors to the town.
She said: “I thought it was a great idea for Crieff because Crieff isn’t the tourist attraction it once was.
“It lacks a tourist trail and to have this cow trail I just thought was great because one of the best things about Crieff is its views so it’s fantastic to be able to go around and just have a sit and see what we can see.
“And Scottish people love Highland cows.”
The Dundee-born artist has lived in Crieff for 34 years and was keen to get involved in the project that would help brighten up the area.
She said: “I do lots of community work in Crieff and if it’s good for Crieff then I love it.”
Some of the local artists have taken up residence in Crieff Garage on East High Street, and in the empty premises next to Victoria Bloom. Members of the public are invited to visit and see the progress being made.
The artworks are the brainchild of David McCann from Crieff Succeeds, who said he was “excited” to see the unique trail well on the way to fruition.
David said: “Crieff is a beautiful place with a fascinating history. The idea of being able to combine these two things to create an interactive family-friendly trail which incorporates a place to sit and appreciate your environment is too good to miss.
“Hopefully, the trail will bring new visitors to Crieff and raise much-needed funds for SCAA, which is an exceptional charity – literally saving and improving lives across Scotland every day.”
