Alba Orvis B team take honours at Lake of Menteith

With SANACC semi-finals dominating the week at LAKE OF MENTEITH, informatio­n has been scarce but the dry fly is still doing well and most of the boats in yesterday’s semi appeared to be fishing around the islands, Sandy Bay and the top end as well as Gateside Bay.

In the Scottish Clubs Championsh­ip the 13 clubs (39 anglers) netted 116 fish and weighed in 55 for 120lb.

Heat eight was won by the Alba Orvis FF B team of James Gardiner (3), David Bonnington (9) and Paul Garner (8) with a total of 20 fish.

Caley Liners B’s Stephen Francis (12), Billy Muir (4) and Kenny McClymont (2) were second with 18 fish and the Ardrossan Eglinton AC B team of Darren Rourke (8), Joseph Wood (7) and Tony Goggans were third with 15.

Top individual rod was Stephen Francis with 12 for 24lb 12.3oz around Chicken Leg Bay on a dry olive.

Heat eight of the Menteith boat league saw 22 anglers catch 109 fish. Top rod was Brian Mackenzie with 12 fish, Ronnie McKean was second with 11 and Ken Oliver took third.

The majority of the fish on the night were caught on dry flies around Malling shore and in the cages.

Brian MacKenzie is now top of the leader board with Bill Ramage in second place.

Next week the Angler’s World Individual Heat is held on Sunday and there are still places left.

LINTRATHEN LOCH’S club championsh­ip was held on Saturday night with six boats landing over 50 fish.

Fished under two sets of rules – one the traditiona­l four fish weighed in for heaviest bag, the other to SANACC rules.

First in the four fish category was Tam Kelly with 8lb 9 oz. Second was Gavin Ferguson with 7lb 9oz and third was Stuart Smith on 7lbs 3oz.

On the cards results, Lee Anderson took first with seven for 12lb 7oz. Scott Reith was second with six for 10lb 6oz and third went to Dave Marfizo with four for 6lb 11oz.

Out during the day on Saturday, the Ferry Fly Dressers’ five boats had 33 fish for 63lb 14oz with 20 fish returned and on Sunday the Leslie & Glenrothes, with 10 rods, had over 70 fish. Best flies include dabblers, nymphs and cormorants, especially orange.

The 77th Dundee Novelty competitio­n took place on MONIKIE with 13 anglers taking a total of 21 trout for 37lb 11oz.

First prize and winner of the Novelty Cup was Roddy McKay with four for 6lb 15oz. Second prize and the James D Hardie Memorial Cup went to Gordon Mckay with four for 6lb 8oz.

At FRANDY FISHERY, Ronnie Stewart from Alva kept four fish weighing 9lb; Gerry Grattan (Kincardine) kept two weighing 4lb 8oz and released a further four; James Barbour from Tayport kept two, 4lb 8oz; Davie Hunter, from Alloa, two weighing 4lb 8oz and released four; Jim Symon (Cowie) kept four for 8lb.

Catch and returns included: Mark Paterson (Stirling), six; Andy Hunter (Alloa) eight; Ian Wilkie (Madderty) five; James Scobie (Blackford) 10; Kenny Hutchison (Alloa) five; Crawford McEwan (Newmains) 16; Jim McEwan from Newmains, eight; Ronnie Turnbull (Tillicoult­ry) nine; Jimmy Miller (Tillicoult­ry) six.

Fishing from the boats Douglas Oliver and party from Yorkshire kept nine weighing 20lb; Louis Hansen and Stan Guzik (Alloa) six, 11lb and released a further three; Bill Ramage from Alva kept four for 10lb.

Clubs were out in force with Cleveland Police keeping 17 fish weighing 32lb; Perthshire FC, four, 8lb 2oz; SPRA (North) 19 fish, 36lb 6oz and released 14 – heaviest 4lb; Rowbank AC kept 38 weighing 72lb and released 26; Bonnybridg­e AC, 37, 69lb 11oz, released 11; Good Companions AC, 23 weighing 46lb; Monifieth Trout AC, 34, 56lb; Edinburgh Masonic Club, 13, 24lb 4oz; North Berwick AC, 12 fish for 40lb 4oz and two returned; Stanley AC, 21 weighing 45lb and returned 15.

The top flies included the bibio hopper, black hopper, cormorants, candy floss fabs, red diawl bach and the yellow owl.
