Deewok out of hibernation for the new season

Dundee FC advertising for someone to take on the role of Dens Park mascot for match days and also for charity and school visits throughout the year

Dundee Football Club has announced its notorious mascot Deewok could be back out of cold storage for next season.

The Deewok mascot had been a Dens Park fixture for almost 20 years but was dropped at the end of season 2017/18.

The club say its “famous” mascot has been “sleeping for over a year now” and have put up an advert for an “enthusiastic and reliable individual” to bring the bear “out of hibernation”.

The successful candidate would pull on the suit pre-match and at half-time.

The new Deewok would take up the role eight years on from an incident which brought the star bear’s reputation into disrepute.

In 2011, holder-of-the-role Andy Lynn was arrested and charged in connection with an alleged assault on a Partick Thistle supporter during a match.

The charges were subsequently dropped and it is understood Mr Lynn, who was 41 at the time, was spoken to by the fiscal’s office and warned about his future conduct.

The incident unfolded outside the commentator’s box at Dens Park during the match between the two sides in the former Irn-Bru Division One on April 30 2011.

The bust-up was understood to have taken place in full view of fans following Dundee’s second goal of the match, which the Dark Blues went on to win 3-2.

The 47-year-old Partick Thistle fan was ejected from the ground following the apparent bust-up and subsequently charged with breach of the peace but the case was also dropped.

Mr Lynn, who is also a fan of the club, was not suspended during the investigation and went on to continue as the popular Dens Park mascot.

A spokesman for Dundee FC at the time said that the club had not been aware of the incident and there would have been “no reason for us to be told”.

The role also sees the post holder carry out a number of charity and school visits throughout the year, as well as the traditional role of rousing the Dundee home fans.
