Dons are keen to lure Wilson back north

-

Aberdeen hope to discover soon if James Wilson will return to Pittodrie.

The striker, who spent last season on loan at the Dons from Man United, is now a free agent.

Wilson showed signs of finding his form at the end of the campaign and scored the winning goal against Hibs on the last day of the season.

The Dons are keen to bring Wilson back on a permanent deal but the 23-year-old has been linked with clubs in the English Championship.

Aberdeen cannot hope to match the financial package they can offer but Dons boss Derek McInnes hopes he can entice Wilson into coming back.

McInnes’s patient pursuit has already paid off with the arrival of full-back Greg Leigh from NAC Breda earlier this week.

It was a case of third time lucky for the Dons as they completed the signing of the 24-year-old they have been tracking for a year.

McInnes said: “We came close to bringing him here in January and he was on our radar last summer. He took the decision to play in Holland and we continued to watch him.

“When Max Lowe went back to Derby in December we moved quickly to try to secure Greg, although it wasn’t easy to deal with Breda at that point.”

He continued: “I’m really pleased to get Greg as Max clearly did very well for us in that position.

“Max is an attacking threat and his speed was very beneficial to the team. We see a lot of similarities in Greg but he is more experienced.”

Leigh will feature for his new club in the friendly against Connah’s Quay Nomads at Fota Island Resort in Ireland today (2pm kick-off).

McInnes is aware the Welsh club, who will play Kilmarnock in the first round of the Europa League next month, have earned a reputation for being a physical side after reaching the final of the IrnBru Challenge Cup last season.

McInnes said: “We were keen to play an Irish game but Cork’s game was moved to the Friday and they are playing again on Monday.

“Connah’s Quay approached us,but we said we were over here in Ireland. They said they were willing to come over and play, so it’s worked out well.

“A few people have told me they are physical but hopefully they see the game as a training game and an extension of their preparations. We certainly do.”
