Tearful Minogue recalls missing festival when ill

Poignant moment as star tells crowd of her cancer diagnosis heartache

Kylie Minogue broke down in tears at Glastonbury as she recalled missing performing at the festival 14 years ago after her breast cancer diagnosis.

The Australian singer, 51, was due to headline in 2005 and had to cancel to undergo treatment.

But yesterday Minogue took to the Pyramid Stage for her first full set at the event – where she was briefly joined by Coldplay star Chris Martin.

The tearful star told the audience: “In 2005 I was meant to be here. Circumstances meant I did not make it.

“I wished things were different, but life is what it is. We are all together in this moment.”

Minogue said it was a moment where she “realised not only this story but our story”, as she gestured to the crowd.

“Thirty plus years together,” the former Neighbours star said.

The singer said in 2005 that she instead watched it at home.

She said: “Some of the artists covered some of my songs and that is the spirit and gracious nature of Glastonbury”.

Minogue invited Coldplay star Chris Martin to join her and they performed her hit Can’t Get You Out Of My Head.

She sang a mix of old and newer hits, including Especially For You, Locomotion and Love At First Sight. She also welcomed Nick Cave on stage for a duet of their 1995 single Where The Wild Roses Grow.

Minogue later shared pictures from her set on Instagram. “Thank you SO MUCH!” said the singer. “Words cannot describe what today meant to me.”

Meanwhile, Damon Albarn – who performed with his supergroup The Good, The Bad & The Queen – urged the audience not to give up on politics.

He reminded the crowd he had played Glastonbury in 2016, days after the EU referendum.

“At the time I said democracy had failed us because it was ill informed. Which is true but it was probably more that we didn’t engage with it enough.” He added: “Don’t give up on politics. “You might give up on the politicians but don’t give up on the process and democracy itself because the alternative is quite terrifying.”
