A man remains seriously ill in hospital following a weekend hit-and-run.

The 34-year-old was struck by a car in the centre of Brechin shortly after 2am yesterday morning.

Police have launched a public appeal to help trace the driver of the vehicle involved.

Despite the incident taking place in the early hours, they hope locals hold crucial information to assist the investigation, including possible dashcam footage from other vehicles which may have been in the area at the time.

The incident happened in City Road, just off Brechin High Street, at 2.15am.

A Police Scotland spokesman said a silver Renault Clio was involved in the hit-and-run, near City Road’s junction with Damacre Road.

The victim, who is understood to be local to Brechin, was rushed to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee after suffering what have been described as serious injuries.

The full extent of those injuries have not been disclosed.

City Road remained closed off for much of yesterday as part of the inquiry.

Brechin Community Council chairwoman Jill Scott urged anyone with information to come forward.

“It was quite a shock to wake up to the news and obviously my first thoughts are with the person involved and their family.

“Brechin is a small community and I am sure people will know something which can help the police, so it is important they provide whatever help they can.”

A police spokesman said: “If anybody witnessed the collision, saw the vehicle in Brechin or has any information or dashcam footage then the police would like to speak to them as a matter of urgency.

“Police Scotland can be contacted on 101 or speak to any officer.

“Alternatively if they want to remain anonymous but have information that they want to supply, they can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
