Thistle book their spot in last eight

-

Partick Thistle booked their place in the Betfred Cup quarter-finals after a dramatic 3-2 extra-time win over Ross County.

The game looked destined for penalties until Steven Saunders rose to nod home a late winner.

After a drab opening 45 minutes, former Thistle fans’ favourite Blair Spittal opened the scoring when he arrowed a stunning effort beyond Scott Fox on the hour.

The hosts barely threatened until veteran striker Kenny Miller swept home to equalise after 80 minutes to take the game into extra time. Academy graduate James Penrice then put Thistle ahead after 97 minutes with a lovely free-kick from 25 yards out.

County have been in fine form and refused to give up as substitute Harry Paton made it 2-2 with an excellent low strike beyond Fox after 105 minutes.

The second half of extra-time resembled a basketball game as play raced from one end to the other with both sides pushing for a winner, which eventually came courtesy of a Saunders header from Penrice’s corner.

Florian Kamberi shrugged off speculation regarding his future to inspire brittle Hibs to a scarcely-merited 5-3 victory over Morton after extra-time.

The Swiss attacker, who has been linked with a £2 million switch back to his homeland with Basel, notched a brace to send the Hibees into the quarter-finals despite another defensively dismal showing.

The hosts blew a comfortable 2-0 lead in the first half when an instinctive finish by Bob McHugh and a Lewis Stevenson own goal cancelled out strikes by Scott Allan and Josh Vela.

Hibs reclaimed their advantage after the break when Kamberi pounced on an error by Danny Rogers, only for Morton to level on the cusp of full-time when Steven Whittaker turned into his own net.

A controversial Kamberi effort in extra-time – scored amid furious claims for offside which ultimately saw Morton boss David Hopkin dismissed – and a late Christian Doidge goal secured Hibs’ passage to the last-eight.

Kilmarnock booked their place in the quarter-finals as they squeezed past Hamilton after extra-time to ease the pressure on manager Angelo Alessio. Dom Thomas got the only goal of the game.
