United kids hit for seven in mauling at Cappielow

-

It was literally men against boys at Cappielow yesterday as what was virtually a Dundee United youth team was overwhelmed by the much more experienced home side who had six first-team players in their ranks.

No less than seven of the Tangerines are youth team players and were up against a strong Morton side and in the first half in particular it was oneway traffic .

It only took Ton six minutes to take the lead when Cameron Salkeld easily knocked in a cross from the left.

Eight minutes later Lewis McGrattan rifled a 20-yarder into the top corner for number two.

On 34 minutes the Tannadice youngsters should have pulled one back.

Lewis Neilson made a good run along the byeline and cut the ball back to Archie Meekison.

His first-time shot was blocked by the keeper and Meekison blazed the rebound over the bar from six yards.

But two minutes later, however, the visitors fell further behind when ex-United and Dunfermline striker Robbie Muirhead headed home at the far post.

Then on the stroke of halftime Kevin Orsi weaved his way through the Tangerines defence to net from close range.

In a good counter-attack, Darren Watson was only denied by Ton keeper Sam Ramsbottom on 54 minutes.

Although the second period was more even, the home side extended their lead after 66 minutes, with Salkeld running on to a long ball to net his second.

Orsi then nodded in number six with eight minutes left.

A minute later substitute Finn Duffy put through his own goal to complete the scoring.

Dundee United: Currid (Erskine 46), Davidson, Williamson, Cooney, Graham, Neilson, Meekison (Duffy 57), Jones (F Robson 70), Watson, Mochrie, Banks, Duffy. All three subs used.
