Keeping his cool
Jordan Cownie, ice hockey player with Dundee Stars, shares his recipe for a healthy, happy lifestyle.
Q How did you originally discover ice hockey?
A My dad and I went to the opening day of the rink in 2000 and the Dundee Tigers were playing that day. Six months later I gave it a go for myself and haven’t looked back.
Q How often do you train?
A We train on the ice three times a week and it’s mostly to work on our team systems and prepare ourselves for the weekend games ahead.
Q What do you to keep fit, aside from ice hockey?
A The gym is also a huge part of my lifestyle as we train in the gym as a team three times a week.
Q What do you do to stay stress-free?
A I like to spend my free time with friends and family. I use my down time to forget about hockey and enjoy time away from the rink.
Q Do you stick to a healthy diet and, if so, tell us a bit about it?
A Yes for the most part. I’m pretty relaxed about what I eat and as long as it’s fresh and cooked in the kitchen that’s fine with me.
Q Do you drink alcohol?
A On the odd occasion where we have a few days off or if there is something to be celebrated or a special occasion. Apart from that it’s pretty full-on through the season. I get to enjoy myself a little more in the summer.
Q Any weaknesses or guilty pleasures?
A Crisps. I love a box of Pringles.
Q Any other health tips/ secrets?
A I feel like a healthy lifestyle comes from working hard everyday and surrounding yourself with good people which then leads to happiness, which is what I like to pride myself on.
Q Advice to anyone wanting to get into ice hockey?
A Don’t hesitate. Get yourself down to the rink, figure out the basics of skating and then take it from there. You’ll love it.
