100 years ago

Those who indulge in dainties at the tea-table have now to face an increase in the price of such edibles. In accordance with an arrangemen­t arrived at by Dundee master bakers, a slight increase in the price of pastries and cakes came into operation yesterday. This, of course, is the result of the rise in the price of flour which now costs approximat­ely 19s 6d more per sack. As previously reported, the price of a loaf bread will not be altered and it is only such things as scones and iced cakes which are affected by the present increase.

The storm-battered royal yacht, with the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh on board, punched its way through heavy seas down the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand yesterday to Christchur­ch. Although the weather was still bad, conditions had improved from the 60mph winds and raging seas which pounded the Britannia and its escort vessel as they pushed through the notorious Cook Strait separating the North and South Islands. Two members of the crew were injured in the storm.

A van belonging to two travelling people was waved through the entrance to Rosyth naval base without being checked by Ministry of Defence police, Dunfermlin­e Sheriff Court heard yesterday. The court was told that when the Bedford van left by another exit it was found to contain over £41,000 worth of equipment stolen from two ships undergoing refit. Two men admitted stealing 49 flexible hoses, a pressure control, four valves, an air cooler end cap, seven protection plates and nine deck plates from the base.

A welcome Arctic blast has breathed fresh life into Scotland’s biggest ski resort. After a tough start to the snowsports season – which threatened to be one of the worst on record – skiers and snowboarde­rs were back at Glenshee, enjoying some long-awaited fine conditions. A flurry of white stuff meant bosses were finally able to open many of their lifts. And more snow is forecast for the rest of the weekend. It is a major relief to Glenshee operators, after mild weather hit mountain resorts across the country.
