100 years ago

A telegram was received by the Central Secretary of the Scottish Drift Net and Line Fishermen’s Associatio­n intimating that the Government had turned down the Scottish fishermen’s applicatio­n for a guaranteed price of 50s per cran for herrings. For some weeks past an influentia­l committee has been in London conducting negotiatio­ns with Government Department­s and yesterday’s decision has created profound disappoint­ment amongst all connected with the fishing industry over Scotland.

50 years ago

Over 80 delegates from all over Scotland and visitors from south of the border are attending the annual meeting of the Grand Lodge of Scotland of the Internatio­nal Order of Good Templars in Dundee. A civic reception was held in their honour in City Chambers. Guests were received by Lord Provost W.K. Fitzgerald and the Lady Provost, and the Town Clerk, Mr Gordon Watson and his wife. The Lord Provost mentioned well-known Dundee families connected with the Good Templars including DM Browns and Smith Brothers.

A 71-year-old woman has travelled thousands of miles to Dundee from her home in the USA to search for a pen pal she has not heard from for 50 years. Winifred Schram, formerly Moss, from Vancouver, Washington State, received her last letter from Dundee pen pal Margaret Lyall shortly after VJ Day in 1945. “Margaret wrote to say that she had survived the war and had been celebratin­g VJ Day with American boys, but I never heard from her again.” The pair first started writing to each other in 1936.

Perth College chiefs have launched a search for accommodat­ion, just weeks after controvers­ially closing a series of learning centres. Students say they have been left “shocked” by the decision to shut down the education facilities in rural Perthshire. The centres’ tutors and students are in a state of limbo over the future of their classes, despite the facilities closing at the end of this month. Tony Brunton, a student at Kinross, said: “I am incensed at the way Perth College and UHI have gone about closing the centres.”
