Well-known Dundee solicitor Iain Reid, 70

-

Dundee’s legal community has been shocked and saddened by the sudden death, aged 70, on May 27, of Iain Reid – a highly respected and popular solicitor in the city for many years.

Mr Reid was born in Glasgow in 1950 but was educated at Grove Academy in Broughty Ferry where his father was the minister at the Broughty Ferry East Church.

He graduated in law at Dundee University and embarked upon his legal career with the Aberdeen firm of Gray and Connachie.

After marrying Kathleen in 1974, Mr Reid returned to Dundee and worked as a solicitor with Dundee District Council before taking a position with Gourley McBain and finally with Campbell Boath, where he became a partner. He also taught law at Dundee University. Paying tribute, George Donnelly, past-president of the Dundee Bar Association, said: “Iain had a great grasp of the law and was widely respected in the profession.

“He was very self-effacing and great company. He was an absolute gentleman. Iain never had a bad word to say about anybody and I never heard anybody say a bad word of him.”

On his retirement in 2015, Mr Reid was able to devote more time to his many hobbies and interests.

A keen golfer, he was a member at Carnoustie and latterly Drumoig where he served on the committee and became both handicap and seniors club champion in 2015.

He worked with Kathleen to create a beautiful garden at their home in Newport which he extended to the beachfront for the benefit of local walkers. He was a member of the Dundee Bridge Club and enjoyed Scottish Country and ballroom dancing.

He was an enthusiastic singer and a member of two choirs: The Notables in Dundee and Newport’s Quirky Choir.

Sport was a big part of Mr Reid’s retirement. He enjoyed cycling in north-east Fife, was a fan of Airdrie FC and followed England in Test match cricket.

But he also found time to undertake charity work as a volunteer in the Dundee Oxfam bookshop.

Mr Reid is survived by his wife Kathleen and sons Jonathan, a partner with surveyors J&E Shepherd, and Adam and Philip, both doctors, his sister Kate and brother Alan as well as grandchildren Darci, Olivia, Eden, Angus, Brodie and Owen.
