941,831 meals provided in Dundee

-

Charities, the city council and Scottish Government initiatives have provided nearly a million meals to vulnerable people in Dundee during the coronavirus pandemic.

As of June 19, 941,831 meals had been delivered, according to figures from Dundee City Council.

Nearly two thirds of those, 571,723, were through the local authority via direct delivery of food and school meals.

Councillor Lynne Short, equality, fairness and older people spokeswoman for the council, thanked the volunteers and staff who have helped feed those in need during the health crisis.

She said: “It is fantastic that the city has mobilised so quickly and provided such an impressive amount of meals to some of the most vulnerable people in Dundee.

“A health emergency like the coronavirus pandemic has presented real challenges for maintaining equality and fairness.

“But the hard work of volunteers and staff across the city has made a massive contribution to provide shielding individuals, children and the vulnerable with access to food and medicine throughout.”

Aside from nutritional needs, the Tayside Cares portal provides a place to find assistance for various needs, including financial advice and mental health support.

Ms Short added: “The introduction of the Tayside Cares helpline has connected individuals with the sources to provide them with this lifeline support.

“All in, with more than 940,000 meals provided to the community already and commitments to continue this over the summer, the city-wide efforts will ensure no one is forgotten about.”
