Edinburgh will face Bordeaux for place in cup semi-finals in September.

-

Edinburgh’s postponed European Challenge Cup quarter-final against Bordeaux will be played in September, after tournament partners agreed a new schedule to complete the 2019-20 campaign.

The Heineken Champions’ Cup and the Challenge Cup quarter-finals were due to be played in March just a week after rugby went into lockdown for the coronavirus pandemic.

Edinburgh’s second-placed finish in their pool meant they were set to travel to Bordeaux for their last eight game, having already lost and drawn with the French Top 14 side in the pool stages.

The quarter-finals of both tournaments will be played on the weekend beginning September 18 with the semi-finals set for a week later. The final of the Heineken Champions Cup is now set for October 17, with the Challenge Cup final the day before.

EPCR, the organisers of both tournaments, say they still intend for both finals to be played at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille, but given the restrictions of public gatherings and international travel, this decision “remains under review”.

EPCR also revealed that next season’s tournaments may take a different format for a year because of the fixture congestion caused by the pandemic. A 24-club event is being considered with eight representatives from each of the PRO14, Gallagher Premiership and Top 14.

Discussions among the tournament partners are continuing but a start date to the 2020-21 tournaments has been targeted on the weekend of December 11.
