Cathy refused a challenge by publicity officer Mr John Chisholm to add another £1 to her £10 prize by swimming a breadth of the outdoor pool – she can’t swim. Runner-up was 19-year-old Alison Clark from Grangemouth.

Perth and Kinross District Council’s proposals to demolish most of the listed buildings in the disused Stanley Mills complex were partly achieved late at night when fire gutted the North Range. The blaze, which was seen for miles around, prompted about a dozen calls to Tayside’s fire brigade and kept firefighters busy until dawn. It has also rekindled fears in the community about the danger the derelict, but historically important buildings pose to young people who use the site as a playground.

A lightning strike knocked out power to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee on Saturday. The hospital was hit during a dramatic thunder and lightning storm that caused flash flooding across many parts of Tayside and Fife. Although power was quickly restored it disrupted the IT network and digital systems. It meant patients could not phone the hospital and more than two dozen outpatients had scheduled MRI scans postponed. No inpatient services were affected by the power outage.
