The date suggested as a general stoppage on the Clyde and elsewhere as a protest against the increase of house rents is Monday, August 23. This is the recommendation to be submitted from the Parliamentary Committee of the Scottish Trades Union Congress and the Executive of the Scottish Labour Housing Association to the conference in Glasgow. Labour is to be suspended for 24 hours in order to hold a Rent Protest Day. Conference hopes that the rent strike will be vigorously pursued.

The 12th International Patrol Jamborette, in the grounds of Blair Castle, Blair Atholl, begins today until Friday, August 7. Attending the camp are approximately 600 Scouts of whom just over 200 are from overseas. While the official opening is today, the Scottish Scouts were at the camp on Monday ready for the arrival of the majority of the overseas visitors. An exciting programme has been arranged with many activities taking place in the Blair Atholl area. A camp sports event will also take place.

Carolina House, the former Dundee orphanage on Broughty Ferry Road, looks set to be snapped up by developers after nearly two months on the market. The building was the site of the orphanage for 180 years and saw thousands of homeless children pass through its doors during its long history. It was sold in 1985 to a Dundee business man, Derek Kelbie, and turned into a hostel for homeless people. Now agents are confident they have found a buyer for the house. It is in need of upgrading and modernisation.

Police are probing two major blazes at Perth primary schools Fire caused “significant damage” to Viewlands Primary School, 48 hours after another blaze at nearby Oakbank Primary. Fire crews attended Viewlands PS to tackle a fire which engulfed part of the building. It comes after a fire at Oakbank, where residents reported seeing youngsters running away. Both incidents happened in the same week as Perth and Kinross Council issued a warning to local residents to beware of youngsters setting fire to plastic litter bins.
