The healthy state of the Dundee Allotment Holders’ and Amateurs’ Horticultu­ral Associatio­n was reflected in the well-attended annual meeting held last night, when Mr David Craig, the president, occupied the chair. Mr W.M. Mitchell, the secretary and treasurer, reported that last year there were 66 members of the Associatio­n. Today the membership stood at 142. Mr William Nicoll said that while the creation of the plots was a war measure, interest and developmen­t had brought the institutio­n into permanency.

The skipper of the Stonehaven fishing boat Scots Lass yesterday called for assistance from the Department of Agricultur­e and Fisheries to aid him and his two-man crew to get rid of an unusual intruder – a jet black 18-inch long wild mink. An official inspected the deck and fishing gear on the boat and confirmed that there were signs of a mink on board. In case it was still hiding among the fishing gear, traps were set. The official said that it was unique to find the animal on board a fishing boat.

Valentines greetings cards are once again being published in Dundee, thanks to the great-great-great grandson of the founder of Valentines of Dundee and city-based printers Harley & Cox. Andrew Valentine was marketing director of Valentines before leaving to form Andrew Valentine Ltd. He has reached agreement with Fravessi Greetings of New Jersey for exclusive rights to their designs in the UK and Ireland. The new company is called the Valentine Line Ltd and its logo is a line drawing of the Tay Bridge.

Gregor Townsend believes his squad can rebound from their abject display in the opening Rugby World Cup game with Ireland but the head coach admitted they were searching for answers to why the Scots flopped so badly on their opening night. Townsend and his management team had spoken about peaking for the opening game against Ireland in Yokohama but were two tries down after just 12 minutes and 19-3 down at half-time on their way to a demoralisi­ng and comprehens­ive 27-3 defeat.
