Wood and SGN team up on new project
Global energy giant Wood and gas distribution company SGN are set to create a “decarbonisation roadmap” for the north-east coast and north of Scotland with the area tipped to become a “major hydrogen hub”.
The move includes Dundee and Angus, where the proposals will see strategic blue hydrogen production locations, hydrogen transport hubs and potential CO2 storage routes which would run almost parallel with existing natural gas transmission pipelines.
Throughout the North East Network and Industrial Cluster development project, the firms intend to deliver short, medium and long-term solutions for the cross-sectoral decarbonisation.
A multi-disciplinary team of experts from across Wood’s global business, including renewables, carbon capture, hydrogen production and pipeline distribution experts, will investigate repurposing and further developing SGN’s existing distribution gas networks on the east coast and central belt of Scotland as a viable alternative to natural gas, using hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies.
As wells as the north-east activity, key industrial locations such as Grangemouth, Mossmorran and St Fergus will be major focal points for the study.
Joe Sczurko, chief executive of Wood’s Technical Consulting Solutions business, said: “We are delighted to strengthen our partnership with SGN on the North East Network and Industrial Cluster development.
“This study has the potential to play a significant role in decarbonising heavy industry.”
