More than 500 people have signed a petition to stop a drive-through McDonald’s being built in Dunfermline.

The fast food takeaway to be built in the Tesco Extra car park at Duloch was approved by councillors earlier this month. despite 176 letters of objection to the plans.

Liberal Democrat councillor James Calder had raised an amendment calling for the drive-through to be refused on the grounds of increased traffic in an already congested area but this was outvoted. His wife, Aude BoubakerCalder, who is standing as a candidate for the Dunfermline constituency in next year’s Scottish Parliament elections, started a petition calling on Tesco to reconsider the plans.

She said: “More than 500 people have signed the petition to stop a McDonald’s in the Duloch Tesco car park. It is clear huge numbers of people living in the area are opposed to this.

“It is a completely inappropriate location. It is in an already busy area so traffic will get much worse and cause significant noise pollution.

“Worst of all, it is next to a primary school and will contribute to our national obesity crisis. The ball is now in the court of Tesco. I hope they will make the responsible decision and stop the McDonald’s being built.”

The McDonald’s drive-through would create 65 new jobs.

Fife Council transport officers said the fast food outlet would have no negative impact on road capacity, but Mr Calder believes it would create “traffic chaos”.

A Fife family proved good things can come out of lockdown after raising £5,000 for children’s charity LoveOliver, which supported Isla Cairns’s family during her childhood cancer treatment.

Now she is in remission, the Coaltown of Wemyss family are even more determined to do what they can to raise money for a cause close to their hearts and Isla, 3, and her family took part in the 2.6 Challenge earlier this year, which saw them cycle 10.4 miles as part of a group effort to travel the London Marathon distance, raising more than £5,000 in the process.

But they didn’t stop there, as mum Laura Cairns handed over another £5,000 raised through the sale of face masks over the last few months. Isla’s great aunt, Barbara Drummond, had aimed to raise £100 by making the face coverings while shielding, but raised an incredible 50 times as much thanks to the support of friends, family and supporters.
