● Cameron Norrie was well beaten by third seed Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals of the St Petersburg Open tennis tournament.

British number three Norrie had reached the last eight with strong wins over Taylor Fritz and Miomir Kecmanovic but proved to be no match for world number 10 Rublev, who broke serve five times in a 6-2 6-1 victory.

● Johanna Konta has brought her season to a close after pulling out of next week’s Ostrava Open.

A representa­tive for the British number one said that Konta is uncomforta­ble travelling to the Czech Republic because of rising coronaviru­s cases across Europe. She joins Petra Kvitova, Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, Angelique Kerber and Garbine Muguruza in pulling out, while Marketa Vondrousov­a has tested positive for Covid-19.

● Diego Ulissi edged a thrilling climax to claim victory in stage 13 of cycling’s Giro d’Italia, with Joao Almeida close behind as he increased his overall lead to 40 seconds.

Ulissi, representi­ng Team UAE Emirates, powered for the line at the end of a 192 kilometre ride between Cervia and Monselice to get the better of Al me ida( Deceuninc kQuick Step) and Patrick Konrad (BoraHansgr­ohe).

● England’s World Cup-winning cricket captain Eoin Morgan will take the reins at Kolkata Knight Riders after Dinesh Karthik stood down from the role as he focuses on his batting for the remainder of this year’s Indian Premier League.

Morgan, who was signed at auction for £563,000 in December last year, has amassed 175 runs at an average of 35 and a strike-rate of just under 130 in the 2020 campaign, where he has been acting as Karthik’s deputy.
