Jazz to hit right note at Lingfield

- ANITA CHAMBERS

FATHER OF JAZZ can make it three wins in as many starts for Roger Varian on his handicap debut at Lingfield.

The four-year-old began life with Michael Bell, finishing second on his only start for the yard in June, before switching to Varian’s care towards the end of the year.

Father Of Jazz certainly hit the ground running, being sent off a short price for a novice heat at Wolverhampton and overcoming a bit of trouble in running to prevail by a cosy length and a half.

The Kingman colt then contested another novice event at Chelmsford in mid-January and he was most impressive in winning by just under five lengths, despite being saddled with a penalty.

It may not have been the strongest of races, but there could be no quibbling with the way Father Of Jazz quickened when asked to go about his business and he looked a cut above his rivals in victory.

An opening mark of 90 in the Betway Handicap is obviously high enough – but the fact he is entered in the Winter Derby suggests his connections think he could be a touch better than a handicapper with time.

THRILL SEEKER has been in fine heart in recent weeks and can keep up the good work in the Bombardier BritishHopped Amber Beer Handicap.

He returned to action in December after a short layoff, quickly hitting the mark as a hot favourite in a novice contest at Wolverhampton, albeit an average one.

Two handicap runs have yet to yield any joy, beaten eight and a half lengths at Southwell on the first occasion before going down by a length at Lingfield on his most recent start. He could not find space in running on that latter occasion – a factor clearly not lost on the handicapper who has hiked him 3lb for that defeat.

That said, Thrill Seeker could still be capable off his revised perch.
