Russell hungry to get working with youngster

-

Finn Russell is convinced his blossoming off-field relationship with Cameron Redpath can translate into success on the pitch for Scotland this weekend.

Redpath is set to follow in dad Bryan’s footsteps and make his international debut against England at Twickenham tomorrow.

The Bath centre played for England at youth level and has previously been in Eddie Jones’ squads, but has now committed his future to Scotland and will make his bow in the eagerly-anticipated Six Nations opener against the Auld Enemy.

Russell is excited by the prospect of linking up with the highly-rated 21-year-old and is hopeful their early discussions hint at a bright future together.

He said: “I was chatting to Cammy Redpath. It’s his first inclusion in the squad at 21 and that’s what age I was when I got my first cap.

“I’ve worked with him closer than the other guys, because he’s a 12, and he’s keen to learn off me and he’s keen to try to fit in as quickly as possible, and to get up to speed with the plays and how we’re looking to attack, mainly.

“I had dinner with him and we blethered away, and he seems like a really good guy.

“And I actually spoke to his dad recently – not about him, but about other things outside of rugby.

“I think with how me and Cam have got on off the field, if that then goes on to the field then it will be really good.

“I’m open to things that he does at Bath and things he’s seeing – and at the same time he’s wanting to learn and trying to fit in and understand how we’re wanting to play, which is great.

“He’s looking to buy in as much as possible.”
