HMS Montrose’ s salute for prince

- EMMA CRICHTON

HMS Montrose was among Royal Navy ships to fire as part of a 41-gun salute to mark the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip.

On Saturday, gun salutes were fired across the UK, in Gibraltar and at sea.

Buckingham Palace said the Duke of Edinburgh, 99, died peacefully in his sleep at Windsor Castle on Friday, two months before his 100th birthday.

Saluting batteries began firing 41 rounds at one round every minute in cities including London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast, as well from Royal Navy warships.

Ships taking part included HMS Montrose, HMS Diamond and HMNB Portsmouth, while the Royal Gibraltar Regiment joined the salute from the British overseas territory, the Ministry of Defence said.

HMS Montrose, a Royal Navy Type 23 Frigate, has been involved in a crackdown on drug gangs, operating in the north Arabian sea.

Her latest success came just a few weeks ago with a £3 million hash and heroin capture – the ship’s third bust in little over a month.

The public were encouraged to observe the gun salutes – fired to mark significant national events – on TV or online, rather than gathering outside.
