Sport in brief
● Double Olympic rowing champion Helen Glover marked her comeback to the sport after an absence of three years by winning gold at the European Championships in Varese, Italy.
Glover and Scottish partner Polly Swann, who has been working as a junior doctor in the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic, repelled a late push by second-placed Romania to win the women’s pairs title.
● Perth’s Scott Donaldson needs one more win to reach next week’s World Snooker Championships after surviving a finalframe shoot-out at the qualifiers in Sheffield.
The 27-year-old trailed Welsh veteran Dominic Dale 5-4 but took the last two frames to scrape through 6-5 and set up a meeting with Romford’s Matt Selt in the final qualifying round tomorrow for a place at the Crucible.
● Jimmy White has been given an invitational card for the next two seasons on the World Snooker Tour.
White, 58, was first awarded the invitational card in 2017 and has had it extended “due to his outstanding contribution to the sport”, the WST said in a statement on its official website.
