Blue Brazil find their form at just the right time for boss Bollan

-

After four successive defeats Cowdenbeath returned to form on Saturday at a vital time to beat promotion play-off seekers Elgin.

The result put Cowdenbeath seven points ahead of bottom side in League Two, Brechin City, and into eighth place on 12 points.

Cowden went at Elgin from the first whistle with skipper Craig Barr going close from setpieces in the first 10 minutes, then they took the lead on 19 minutes when City keeper Tommy McHale got caught out by a long ball into the box and Kris Renton nipped in to nod home.

The Blue Brazil went for a second and McHale did well to stop a Harvey Swann shot, but City were dangerous at times and Conor O’Keefe and Kane Hester tested Cowden goalkeeper Nicky Hogarth.

After the break City tried hard to put Cowden under pressure but they defended well and at the other end McHale made superb saves from Swann, twice, Kyle Miller, Gavin Morrison and Renton, to keep his team in the game, while at the other end Hogarth made good stops from Hester and Brian Cameron.

Cowden manager Gary Bollan wants his players to repeat that form when they go to Coatbridge tomorrow night.

He said: “The passing was much sharper against Elgin and the result was a whole host of chances being created and their keeper having to make a string of top-class saves.

“Had we won by three goals no one could have said we did not deserve it but we have to look to keep that sort of quality of play up.

“Yes the players are finding it difficult having to play so many games in such a short space of time but this sort of performance and result will be a big boost to their confidence.

“We have Albion Rovers at Cliftonhill next and it would be good to repeat Saturday’s show against them. There are plenty of points up for grabs and if we can get a bit of consistency we could greatly improve our position in the table.”

● Brechin City’s troubles continued as they lost 4-2 to Albion Rovers at Glebe Park.
