Plans under way for the Queen’ s Platinum Jubilee

- CRAIG SMITH, LOCAL DEMOCRACY REPORTER

Fife Council is to host a special afternoon tea for invited guests as part of plans to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

This year should see Her Majesty The Queen become the first British monarch to celebrate a platinum jubilee after 70 years of service, and a range of events have been planned up and down the country to celebrate her historic reign – particularly across the weekend of June 2 to 5.

Fife is no different and the Glen Pavilion in Dunfermline has been pinpointed as the venue for an afternoon tea on Friday June 3, which will have a ‘70’ theme.

The council is looking to invite people who may be celebrating their 70th birthday in June, or anyone celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary this year, to the special occasion, and applications are being accepted – either directly by people applying for themselves or by people nominating others – until midnight on April 30.

Names will then be drawn on May 7 ahead of invitations being sent out the week of May 16.

An online form has been created on fife.gov.uk, while people can email civic. office@fife.gov.uk to express an interest to Lynda Birrell, Fife House, North Street, KY7 5LT.

Alternatively, applicants can telephone 08451 55 55 55 extension 440336.

The tea is the latest addition to the raft of council-organised events being laid on, which will include a parade and beacon lighting service, which is open to everyone, on Thursday June 2.

The evening parade will start at 7.15pm from Levenmouth Academy and will finish at the Memorial Park, where there will be a service and lighting of the beacon around 8.30pm.

Trees have also been planted as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy project in Cupar, Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline, while both Dunfermline and St Andrews have submitted bids for city status as part of a platinum jubilee competition.
