Every mickle mek a muckle to tackle climate change

-

Sir, – Mr Cross seeks to restart coal-fired power stations (Letters, April 1), which as we all know runs counter to the collective best knowledge available at the time of writing. His rationale appears to be when the wind don’t blow and the sun don’t shine, we need power and coal is it.

I feel sure Mr Clark will be able to advise where the coal will be sourced, as most if not all UK coal mines have been shut down, and filled with water. From memory Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Poland and Ukraine (Donets Basin region) are the major coal producing regions in Europe.

Perhaps Mr Putin could be contacted and asked to allow coal to be shipped out of Mariupol?

The third part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC was due to be published on Monday. It is hoped that it will be given more publicity than the previous part that was published a month ago. The Russian invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing destruction of Mariupol and starvation of its residents has diverted our eyes, while in the background the climate is changing slowly but without engagement from the big players.

We are on the car being pulled up to the top, the climate tipping point, by those climate-changing forces.

There are opportunities to halt the climb, but we need to individually and collectively read and react. The cost-ofliving increases are also forces pushing on our rollercoaster car.

The Scots phrase “every mickle meks a muckle” applies.

Climate change is not going away, and taking our collective eyes off the ball will affect far more than just Ukraine.

We must continue our focus on all of the major issues – Covid, the cost of living, invasions, partygate, PPE, test and trace, lost loans and fuel poverty.
