Enabling the ‘greased piglet’ to save his bacon brings shame on the Tories

- Ian Wallace. Chapman Drive, Carnoustie.

Sir, – The latest scandal by the Tories makes one’s blood boil over.

In a week of sickening revelations, the thought of No 10 partygoers laughing at cleaners and security guards who tried to warn them they were breaking lockdown rules leaves a particularly bad taste in the mouth.

A security guard was left shaking his head after being laughed at for warning about rule-breaking and Sue

Gray’s report shows this was not an isolated incident either.

She highlighted multiple examples of lack of respect and poor treatment of staff who were left to clean up party paraphernalia, rubbish and vomit when the nation stuck to the rules on isolation made by them.

It is not unsurprising as those at the heart of government didn’t just laugh at the cleaners and security guards and other low-paid workers, they sent them out to work at the peak of the pandemic with no protection, no sick pay and no choice.

Some cleaners were refused furlough and had to travel on public transport to clean a parliament that was not even sitting despite the condemnation of their union and opposition MPs.

Michael Gove claimed these people were key workers.

What happened if they got sick? The government did next to nothing to address the fact that more than two million of the worst off had no right of sick pay at all, with millions more who could only expect an unliveably low sum.

Boris Johnson claimed he had been unaware of the disrespect shown to these staff members, stating it was disgraceful and intolerable, but I am afraid I do not believe him.

He oversaw a government culture, indeed an ideology, where it wasn’t just acceptable to be rude to lowpaid staff – it was acceptable to send them out to die, as some did.

We should never, ever forget that.

Some Tories want to, so they have scurried off, unavailable for media interviews, but the public won’t – especially those who lost loved ones, like our Queen.

These are the wait-andsee brigade for the Sue Gray report, then the Met inquiry and now the parliamentary inquiry on standards – it just goes on and on.

Boris has been given the nickname the “greased piglet” by former PM David Cameron because of his many escapes but the quicker he goes the better, war or no war. That has been an utter disgrace.
